| Martin’s selection for his third World Cup means the Tigers skipper will miss the opening few weeks of a season which he will hope will prove to be as successful as 2006/07. In his tenth year with the club, Martin led Leicester to a Guinness Premiership and EDF Energy Cup double, as well as taking Tigers to the final of the Heineken Cup at Twickenham. In total, he was won five league titles, two European Cups and an Anglo-Welsh Cup since joining from Bristol in 1997.
Prior to playing for Bristol and Tigers, Martin played club rugby for Newcastle Gosforth. He has since gone on to win over 50 caps for England and toured Australia and New Zealand in 2001 and 2005 respectively with the British and Irish Lions. Those two Lions tours earned him six Test caps – a remarkable achievement in two three-Test series’, especially considering he was only called up to the 2001 tour as a late replacement shortly before the first match against the Wallabies.
The former England captain was named the club’s Members' Player of the Season in 1999/2000, and the Zurich Premiership and PRA Player of the Season in 2004/05, as well as being shortlisted for the Guinness Premiership Player of the Year in 2006/07. He was awarded an MBE in the 2004 New Year's Honours.
