| A total of 65 young players from all over the Leicester Tigers region have had their first taste of the community department’s ABC initiative aimed at the bigger-than-average players in the 14-16 age group.
Minimum criteria meant that every one of the players attending was over six-feet tall with at least size 10 shoes – most were a lot bigger and the opening evening proved to be a great success.
Tigers Academy conditioning coach Paddy Mortimer said: “The big, heavy guys don’t always have the best opportunity to play at the highest level as juniors because the laws of the junior game encourage lighter, more mobile lads to play in the front five.” “We have started this initiative to encourage the bigger lads to get skills advice and get them on the rugby path.” “We want them to follow advice we give on the garage gym, participate in judo, develop athleticism and attend a monthly ABC clinic.”
Next Session Update
Following on from another successful day at Welford Road on April 26. We are please to confirm that the next ABC session will be on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the Tigers Training Ground, Oval Park, Wigston Road, Oadby.

Topics to be covered are Rugby, Judo & Posture and Strongman – this will be an active session so please be prepared for all eventualities. We will also expect all those attending to have joined and be participating in Judo at a local venue as discussed.
This will be the last ABC session of this season and we will explain the pathway forward in to the 2008/2009 season on the evening.
Please contact matt.williams@tigers.co.uk to confirm attendance of answer questions / queries.
All players taking part need to be working on three tasks designed to help them develop.
First, each player must work towards completing the plank exercise tasks as detailed on the PDF file attached every day. Also every player must work to developing and exercising in their own ‘Garage Gym’ and finally it is recommended that every player registers will their local BJA-approved judo club. In registering, they must enter ‘TJP’ (Tigers Judo Pathway) as their middle name on the registration forms. Details of local BJA clubs can be found on the British Judo Association website http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/. Click here to download a list of BJA clubs to find one within your area.
We must stress Tigers recommend only BJA approved clubs and you must join/attend a BJA club to be involved in the ABC Programme.
